WEEK 2

This week in class we got to have our first live model experience. It wasn't as awkward as everyone was asking me about. It was just like how I expected it it would be, which is more focused, and trying to achieve a good gesture drawing. My mood would change from having fun, being excited about the pose, to frustrated. We did a lot of different positions and times, it gave me a great sense of how to make a fast economic drawing of the human form.

Seeing some of my drawings had some good and bad variations of the  human proportions. This is something that I hope to improve on. Amy did announce that this is a common issue that is a struggle for most artists. It was fun to see how some of my peers where coming along. It was refreshing to see that some of there interpretations, and styles looked on paper. it's comforting to know that I am surrounded with peers who are successful at something that I would like to achieve myself. I am already looking forward to our next live model drawing day. Amy and I discussed how my fast gesture marks were a bit strong and fast. Next time I am hoping to work on that and making sure my human proportions are accurate.

We also got our skeletons. I had no idea how long it took to clean all the clay off of it. It was nice to get familiar with the clay and how I will be applying it. Once Amy explained all the latin names of the spinal column, she showed us how to navigate through our atlas'. We were assigned to start getting familiar with the muscles and to work our way down the spine. I am slightly intimidating to start but I know that having this background knowledge will help so much with my drawings. I am looking forward to what this week will bring. Hopefully I can produce a gesture drawing that shows improvements in the areas I want to improve on. Secondly, I hope to control the clay, and grasp working with the skeleton.

WEEK 1

I have been looking forward to be able to take this class since I heard about it freshmen year. I have always enjoyed drawing and painting. I also feel like I have a good grasp of forms, and space. As much as I have enjoyed drawing still lives, perspective, and abstract, I am thrilled that I will get a semester to help me with human form. It's something that I have not been spending my time on because I do find the human body an intimidating subject to draw. I can already tell that with the first two days of quick drawings, that I am going to improve as an artist thanks to this class.

Our first day of drawing was really refreshing. We were handed beautiful sea shells to draw. At first getting shells seemed kind of random. It helped me get familiar with observing the subject, and helping me with my line pressure. This is a technique I will be applying to drawing models. I hope the more I play with line, the more naturally it will come to me. It was also really nice to see what the other class mates were doing, and how their drawing styles are.

Just recently in class we were getting a  lectured on the importance of the spinal column and rib cage. Both were great basics to learn about and also made a great starting point to the human form. It was extremely interesting to learn about the functions and importance of the spinal column. Like I stated before, I feel like my drawing skills will improve this semester and I hope I can take what I learn from this semester, and continue to play around with the human form and adapt my own style.
